Warmth during walks and rest breaks

A wool coat gives your dog an extra warming layer on cold days and during breaks before or after activity. Adapt its use to your dog's coat, activity level and the temperature. Check regularly that your dog is comfortably warm.

Not sure which size to choose?

Sizes are based on your dog's back length in centimetres. Measure your dog and choose the size with the same back length. This is a good starting point for a coat that fits properly.

How to measure your dog

  1. Start between the shoulder blades. Have your dog stand straight and still, and find the point midway between the shoulder blades.
  2. Measure to the bend in front of the tail. Follow the back to the point where the back ends and the tail begins. Gently lifting the tail makes this transition easier to feel.
  3. Measure along the back. Use a soft tape measure and follow the shape of the back.

Tip: A coat that is slightly long is better than one that is too short.

What do the measurements mean?

  • The size, for example M 45 cm, is the dog's back length, measured from between the shoulder blades to the transition in front of the tail.
  • On the coat, this corresponds to the length from the neck adjustment to the middle of the dart sewn into the back of the standard model, or to the tail cut-out on the terrier model.
  • The coat's total length, from the neck adjustment to the edge, is 10–15% longer than the stated size. This allows it to cover the hips and extend down over the hindquarters.
  • The neck adjustment should sit at the base of the neck, slightly in front of the shoulder blades. On the standard model, the base of the tail should sit approximately in the middle of the rear dart.

Standard model or terrier model?

Many Canelana dog coats come in two versions. Both are measured in the same way but have different shapes at the back.

Standard model

Suitable for: dogs that carry their tail low or straight behind them.

Shape at the back: the coat extends over the base of the tail, hips and thighs.

Rear adjustment: yes; the coat can be tightened so that it covers the thighs and hindquarters.

Terrier model

Suitable for: dogs that carry their tail upright and dogs that dislike having anything resting over their tail.

Shape at the back: a rounded cut-out allows the tail to move freely.

Rear adjustment: no; the terrier model has no rear adjustment.

The terrier model suits many terriers, Danish–Swedish farmdogs, poodles and other dogs with a high tail carriage. If you are unsure, watch how your dog carries its tail on a walk.

Dachshund sizes

Some models in the Canelana range also come in dedicated dachshund sizes. These are tailored to dachshunds and other short-legged dogs with long backs, so that the coat fits well at the front without extending too far down the sides. Back length is measured in the same way as for other dogs.

How to put on the coat

  1. Slip the coat over the dog's head.
  2. Pull it slightly forwards and upwards, and adjust the neck to a comfortable fit.
  3. Fasten the section that runs under the chest and over the back.
  4. Fasten the section between the front legs and adjust the elastic if necessary.
  5. Standard model: tighten the rear adjustment so that the coat covers the thighs and hindquarters. The terrier model has no rear adjustment.
  6. If the coat has rear leg straps, lift one hind leg at a time and pass it through the elastic strap. These straps help keep the back of the coat in place.

Washing and caring for wool products

One major advantage of wool is that it is largely self-cleaning, but there are a few points to keep in mind when washing and caring for it.

  • Shake the product and air it outdoors in fresh air for a couple of hours. Dirt usually stays on the surface rather than penetrating the wool fibres.
  • When washing is needed, Canelana recommends machine washing on a wool cycle at 30°C with a dedicated wool detergent.
  • Wash wool products separately for the best results.
  • Preferably avoid hand washing, as it can be harder to control the temperature and rinse out detergent and dirt than with machine washing.
  • Spin drying helps the wool fabric dry more quickly and creates less favourable conditions for bacterial growth.
