Starting a Biathlon Program – Quick Guide for Clubs (International)

This summary is intended for clubs and associations planning to start a Youth biathlon program, with a focus on air rifle biathlon, safety, and long-term development.

The recommendations are based on practical experience from working with biathlon clubs at start-up and development level.

Rifle Choice – Start with Air Rifles

Recommendation:
New clubs should start their biathlon activity using air rifles.

Air rifle biathlon offers several clear advantages at start-up:

  • Lower requirements for range facilities

  • Reduced licensing and administrative complexity

  • Lower investment and operating costs

  • Simpler safety and storage procedures

Air rifles are widely used internationally for youth and junior development and are well suited for regional competition where air rifle classes are available.
Smallbore (.22 LR) rifles can be added later as the program grows.

Essential Equipment for Athletes

  • Air rifles

  • Hard rifle cases

  • Magazines (4 per rifle + spares)

  • Ammunition

  • Air pumps (for PCP air rifles)

  • Safety flags / chamber plugs (one per rifle)

Shooting Position Equipment

Adapted to age and development level

  • Shooting supports for younger athletes

  • Rifle slings for prone shooting as athletes progress

  • Arm straps (sling tension straps), club-owned or personal

Range Equipment (Shared)

  • Biathlon air rifle targets (falling targets)

  • Zeroing frame with paper targets

  • Spotting scope with stable tripod

  • Shot indication board

  • Wind flag

  • Shooting mats (biathlon-specific, non-slip)

Proper shooting mats are strongly recommended from the start. Improvised solutions rarely provide sufficient stability or consistency.

Support for Clubs

Clubs can receive guidance on:

  • Equipment prioritisation

  • Age-appropriate setup

  • Efficient start-up planning

It is also possible to book an on-site visit, where equipment is brought for hands-on testing together with practical instruction, adapted to the club’s needs.
